Welcome to Passerelle, a podcast designed to spark the curiosity of French learners.
Emilie , , .
Hi, I'm Emilie, and this week, as always, I'm inviting you to take a few minutes to reflect on a question together.
, , , , .
This episode, like the ones before, is meant to be the start of a conversation. Think of it as an exchange inspired by the podcasts I listen to, the things I read, and everyday conversations.
, .
My goal is simply to give you some food for thought and encourage you to start questioning things in French.
, .
Today, we're going to talk about several things related to learning French.
, .
So, the starting point of our conversation is this famous question.
, est-ce , .
I imagine you get asked this a lot, but why did you start learning French? Actually, there's something else I'm more curious about.
.
I have the opportunity and good fortune to work with people who have been studying French, some for many years.
, , , .
The question then becomes: why keep learning French? Once you've reached a certain level or a personal goal, once you're comfortable enough in most everyday situations, it can be tough to stay motivated and find opportunities to practice regularly.
, , .
To get us thinking about these questions, let's start by discussing why we love the French language.
, .
And then, I think it would be interesting to consider what it really means to master a foreign language.
partie-là, , .
In this section, I want to emphasize what we mean by "language proficiency."
, .
In other words, you might wonder how fluent you really need to be in French to visit or live in a French-speaking country, or just to get by in everyday life.
, , .
And finally, let's connect the dots between learning a language like French and cultural enrichment, in other words, everything we learn beyond the language itself.
, , aimez-vous , , , .
To get back to our original point, we could ask ourselves this question: why do you love the French language? And more broadly, what keeps you learning it?
In my case, I have a special connection to French because it's my native language, of course.
, .
, , .
Come to think of it, that's something else you could reflect on: your relationship with your native language.
, .
Looking back on my own experience, I get the feeling that we inevitably form a strong emotional connection with the very first language we learn to speak.
, .
But who knows, maybe your experience has been different.
, , .
Anyway, if I had to give a starting point to answer that question, I'd say that I love the French language because it's a language that keeps surprising me.
