Welcome to Passerelle, a podcast designed to spark the curiosity of French learners.
Emilie , , .
Hi, I'm Emilie, and this week, as usual, I'd like to invite you to take a few minutes to reflect on a question together.
, .
In each episode, I try to bring you different topics to explore.
, .
My goal is simply to share with you some food for thought and to encourage you to think critically in French.
, , , , , , .
Today, we're going to talk about objects, the things that surround us. Planned obsolescence, repair, recycling – these are words and concepts tied to these objects and the place we give them.
, , .
But I suggest we consider another idea: maintenance, or the art of making things last.
, .
I got a new phone a few days ago.
, cinq , quatre cinq .
I think I bought my old phone four or five years ago. Five years, maybe?
.
I don't really remember.
, , .
So, this time, I decided to go with a refurbished phone.
, , .
Refurbished. It's a word used to describe electronics, like smartphones or computers.
, .
A refurbished product is a product that has been previously owned, then inspected and restored by a reseller or the manufacturer before being repackaged and put back on sale.
, .
The phone I just bought is brand new.
.
That's really impressive.
, .
And when I look at it, I tell myself it's important to take care of it so it lasts.
, , .
This week, I wanted to ponder the following: what kind of relationship do we have with our belongings, and more importantly, how can we take better care of them?
, , .
First, let's look at a concept that goes against the idea of making things last: planned obsolescence.
, .
Next, we'll come back to the importance of taking care of things and how that also means taking care of the people who do that maintenance work.
, .
And finally, we'll explore different ways to make objects last longer and therefore fight against their obsolescence.
, .
So, let's start by looking at this concept, which is the opposite of trying to make things last.
